Gary Moore Bad Monkey Tube Overdrive Pedal
Recently Pedal Pawn listed their Gary Moore Bad Monkey pedal for sale on Reverb for $12,941.57. This came shortly after JHS made the following video comparing the Bad Monkey to several other pedals including the Klon Centaur.
And, wouldn’t you know it, this made a lot of people mad due to the instantly skyrocketing used prices from $50 to $300-500 for this pedal that’s been around for about 19 years.
So, naturally, there were people listing them for exorbitant prices as well. Like the one on eBay for $99,000. Obviously some people are just playing on the hype for fun.
Does Who Owned the Pedal Matter?
But what about a celebrity owned Bad Monkey? That’s where the Gary Moore Bad Monkey pedal comes in.
Originally Pedal Pawn priced the pedal at the 12k price noted above. Now it’s down to a more “reasonable” 6.5k.
Is it a reasonable price? I don’t know. I guess to the right Gary Moore fan it may be. But in practical terms there’s no reason to buy one at any of the current “premium” prices. The fact of the matter is that these were in production for nearly 20 years. There is no shortage in supply. Once people sit on their listings for $300-800 for months on end and the hype train has rolled on out of town the prices with drop. I’ve watched one on FB Marketplace recently drop from around $150 to $85. I believe it sold at the $85 price since I no longer see the listing. The same holds true on reverb.com. The lowest price one today is $130. (Check today’s prices on Reverb.com)
So, if you don’t want to pay 6.5k for the Gary Moore Bad Monkey then wait. Keep your eyes open in the local market place. The prices will drop to more reasonable levels. Keep in mind most Bad Monkey owners aren’t aware of the current hype. Therefore, they won’t be asking an inflated price for the pedal when they decide to sell.
